Dr. Simon Hills (Ngāti Porou) is an evolutionary biologist whose research integrates genomics, ecology, and mātauranga Māori to understand biodiversity and inform conservation efforts. His PhD at Massey University analysed the evolution of New Zealand’s endemic marine snails using DNA and fossil data, providing insights into species adaptation and climate change responses. Dr. Hills has also contributed to studies on kiwi genetics, the evolutionary history of viruses, and the ecological impacts of 1080 on native species. He collaborates with Māori communities to incorporate cultural perspectives into scientific research, enhancing the relevance and impact of his work.
