What does it take to explore one of the least-known places on Earth? Meet Dr Thom Linley, a deep-sea fish zoologist and Curator of Fishes at Te Papa Tongarewa, whose work is uncovering the remarkable creatures that live thousands of metres beneath the ocean’s surface. In the latest addition to our Where Can Science Take You? poster series, discover how Thom combines biology, engineering and creative problem-solving to investigate life in the deep ocean.
Thom’s fascination with fish began as a young child, inspired by rockpool guidebooks. Today, he designs innovative deep-sea cameras, traps and sampling equipment capable of withstanding crushing ocean pressures, helping scientists discover species and behaviours never seen before. His journey shows that curiosity, persistence and a willingness to think differently can lead to an extraordinary career exploring one of Earth’s final frontiers.
